With their big, soulful eyes and playful personalities, Australian sea lions (Neophoca cinerea) are the charismatic charmers of Australia’s southern coast. Unlike many other seal species, they don’t migrate, preferring to stay close to their breeding colonies on sandy beaches and rocky islands.

Social and curious, they spend their days basking in the sun, playing in the surf, or napping in cozy beachside piles. Mothers are incredibly devoted, nursing their pups for up to 18 months—one of the longest care periods among seals. Sadly, these unique marine mammals are endangered, with habitat loss and fishing threats putting them at risk.
